For years, air purification was something we thought about mostly in terms of filters — something that pulled the air through a machine, trapped particles and hopefully made the air around us cleaner.

Then we had an experience that made us look at our indoor environment very differently.

A few months before purchasing our WellisAir, we had a water leak in our attic where our upstairs air-conditioning system sits. The A/C unit drains into a collection pan, and when a faulty overflow valve failed, the pan overflowed and water leaked through into the ceiling of our upstairs hallway.

Naturally, one of our biggest concerns afterward was what we couldn't see.

We were concerned about the possibility of mold, lingering moisture and other contaminants associated with water damage — particularly because this was occurring near the HVAC system that circulates air throughout that part of our home.

And then something very interesting happened.

After the unit had time to acclimate to the environment, its air-quality indicator turned red.

It stayed red for approximately two days.

Then it changed to yellow.

And eventually it changed to blue.

The WellisAir continuously monitors volatile organic compounds in its operating area and uses that red-yellow-blue light system to indicate what its sensor is detecting, with blue representing the cleanest state.

Watching that progression was fascinating.

But what mattered even more to us was that our family could actually notice a difference in the air.

We weren't simply looking at a light on a machine and assuming something had changed. The environment itself seemed noticeably improved.

That experience is a large part of why our WellisAir has remained in continuous use ever since.

WHAT MAKES WELLISAIR DIFFERENT

One of the things that originally intrigued us about WellisAir is that it doesn't operate like a conventional HEPA air purifier.

Traditional filtration works by drawing air through a filter. WellisAir instead uses its Hydropure technology to disperse hydroxyl molecules throughout the surrounding environment, which the company says allows the technology to interact with contaminants in the air and on surfaces rather than relying solely on air being pulled through a filter.

There are also no conventional filters or UV lamps to replace. The unit uses a Hydropure cartridge that WellisAir recommends replacing roughly every three months when operated continuously.

Our unit has now been running for almost six months, and I still pay attention to that little indicator light.

In fact, I watch it quite frequently.

Sometimes it remains blue for long stretches. Other times I'll notice it move into yellow or red, letting me know that something in the environment has changed.

That has made the WellisAir more than simply another appliance we plugged in and forgot about.

It has made us more aware of what's happening in the environment inside our own home.

SO WHAT'S THE SWAP?

For us, the swap wasn't simply:

One air purifier → another air purifier.

It was a change in how we thought about indoor air quality altogether.
